VCE Unit 4 Final Project, watercolour and ink on paper, 502 x 407 mm
As the love of a parent is demonstrated through the sacrifices they make for their children, so was Christ’s love for all of humanity illustrated through His ultimate sacrifice at the Crucifixion. He calls His children to likewise make sacrifices for their brothers and sisters, as that is how we pass on the love He gave us. This truth is what I hoped to portray in the presentation of a figure’s heart as a sacrifice to the viewer, as it overflows with the love revealed through their actions. As vines climb up the arms of the figure, we see the reciprocal effects of the sacrifice manifested in a different but nonetheless valuable way.
The flowers and their personal symbolism include: red field poppies (soldiers’ sacrifice for country); African daisies, or osteospermum (the love of my paternal grandmother); rock roses (the love of my parents); Californian poppies (the love of my maternal grandmother); dog roses (romantic love); cornflowers (the love of God) and primroses (brotherly love).
